Mobile App Helps Farmers Target Crop Inputs

31177_1 A new UK-based mobile app uses satellite technology to help farmers locate isolated pest problems in their fields.

The app, called seeCrop, was created by Intelligent Precision Farming. It beat out 72 other solutions in the UK division of the European Satellite Navigation Competition, a contest designed for those best able to utilize satellite technology to solve problems. When battling a disease, insect or weed, farmers typically treat the entire crop even though the pest might infest only a portion of a field. That wastes time and money.

seeCrop allows farmers to identify, isolate and treat only the area with a problem.

“Feedback from farmers has identified a need for this product and the ESNC funding and business support means we can accelerate the delivery of “seeCrop” allowing farmers to realize the benefits sooner,” said Max Dafforn of Intelligent Precision Farming. “In the future, aggregated data from app users could show regional variations in disease and pest pressures as they develop — information which is not currently available in the UK.”
