DuPont’s agriculture business took a hit in the second quarter by lower corn seed sales, North American herbicide volumes and higher seed inventory write-downs.

The results were partially offset by higher seed prices, higher insecticide volumes, higher soybean volumes and lower seed input costs, DuPont said.

Sales for the agriculture segment, which is DuPont’s largest business by sales, totaled $3.62 billion, unchanged from the year-ago period. The segment’s operating earnings were $836 million, down 11% from $941 million a year earlier.

“While lower Agriculture earnings impacted our results this quarter, we continue to see strong science-driven growth in this segment over the long term,” said CEO Ellen Kullman.
