Dow Chemical’s Agricultural Sciences business posted record sales of $2.1 billion in the first quarter, up 1% from a year ago, driven by crop protection sales in Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Crop protection sales increased 4% as favorable weather prompted an early start to the European herbicide season. Higher sales of insecticides in Latin America also boosted results.

Sales of new crop protection products grew 28%, led by pyroxsulam herbicide.

The company said seed sales fell 7% in the quarter, due to lower planted acreage of corn and sunflowers in Latin America. The late start to the season in North America also hurt sales of corn and canola.

Against this backdrop, we have intervened and remain resolute in achieving our short- and medium-term stated earnings targets.”
